Welcome to Day #2 of Learning Something New with Starfall Labs!
For this week, we're going to learn about the KY-032 IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor, particularly in terms of what it does, how you can use it, and the various applications that you can use as inspiration for you next project!
So what is the Obstacle Avoidance Sensor?
The IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor is a simple, low-cost module designed to detect nearby objects using infrared light. It’s one of the most beginner-friendly sensors in Arduino robotics because it’s easy to wire, easy to understand, and works reliably even in basic environments.
This sensor is extremely common in robot cars, line-following bots, and simple automation projects because it:
- Requires only 3 pins (VCC, GND, OUT)
- Has an adjustable detection distance using a built-in potentiometer
- Works on 5V, making it perfect for Arduino
- Is cheap, widely available, and very robust
- One of the first sensors hobbyists use when learning how robots detect obstacles.

How does it work?
An IR LED emitter sends out invisible infrared light.
An IR receiver (photodiode) detects the light that reflects back from an object.
When something comes close enough to the sensor, the reflected IR signal becomes strong - causing the output pin to change.
Most modules work like this:
LOW = Object detected HIGH = No object
This behavior is determined by the internal comparator and is adjustable using the small onboard potentiometer.
What can you use it for?
The IR Obstacle Sensor is ideal for simple detection tasks such as:
- Avoiding obstacles in robot cars
- Detecting nearby walls or edges
- Automatic doors or counter systems
- Object detection on conveyor belts
- Simple proximity-based automation
- Robot navigation and maze solvers
