Welcome to Day #3 of Learning Something New with Starfall Labs!
For this week, we're going to learn about the Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor, particularly in terms of what it does, how you can use it, and the various applications that you can use as inspiration for you next project!
So what is the Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor?
This Soil Moisture Sensor is a durable and corrosion-resistant sensor used to measure how much moisture is present in soil. Unlike older metal-probe sensors, this design uses capacitive sensing, making it far more accurate and long-lasting, perfect for smart gardening and environmental monitoring projects.
This sensor has become the go-to choice for Arduino hobbyists and DIY growers because it:
- Doesn’t corrode (no exposed metal electrodes)
- Works reliably for many months in damp soil
- Provides analog output, allowing fine-grained moisture readings
- Is simple to set up using only VCC, GND, and OUT
- Is affordable and widely used in home automation and IoT projects
Its reliability makes it a favorite for anyone building self-watering planters, greenhouse monitors, or plant-care systems.

How does it work?
Inside the sensor is a special capacitive plate that changes its electrical capacitance based on how much water surrounds it in the soil.
Wet soil increases capacitance
Dry soil lowers capacitance
The onboard circuitry converts this into a smooth analog voltage that your Arduino can read. Higher moisture = lower analog value (and vice versa).
Its fully sealed PCB design helps prevent oxidation and false readings, making it ideal for long-term use.
What can you use it for?
The Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor is the perfect component for:
- Automatic plant watering systems
- Smart gardens and indoor plant setups
- Greenhouse monitoring
- IoT gardening projects (ESP8266/ESP32)
- Soil moisture data logging
- Agriculture experiments or school STEM projects It’s a great way for hobbyists to learn about environmental sensing and automation.
